Take part in Banff's Traditional Indigenous Culture with Indigenous Tourism
- September 24, 2024
Indigenous tourist sites offer visitors the opportunity to connect with the heritage and traditions of the people who have inhabited this land for thousands of years. It is our mission at Charltons Banff Hotel to promote these experiences, so our guests can experience the vibrant Indigenous culture of this region!
Indigenous tourism enriches travel experiences while preserving Indigenous cultures and languages. Through guided tours, cultural workshops, and storytelling, visitors gain a deeper understanding of Indigenous cultures' history, traditions, and contemporary lives, fostering respect for their profound connection to the land.
Banff offers a variety of Indigenous Tourism activities:
1. Guided Cultural Tours
One of the most impactful ways to learn about Indigenous culture is through GUIDED TOURS led by knowledgeable Indigenous guides. These tours not only showcase the magnificent beauty of Banff National Park but also include storytelling that highlights the rich history and significance of the land. You’ll learn about traditional uses of plants, the importance of wildlife, and the spiritual connections that Indigenous peoples have with the mountains.
2. Traditional Craft Workshops
Experience Indigenous culture through hands-on workshops. These sessions often include activities such as bead work, drumming, and storytelling. Not only do these workshops provide a creative outlet, but they also offer insights into the cultural significance of these practices. Engaging with Indigenous artisans allows you to appreciate the skill and history behind their crafts.
3. Cultural Events and Festivals
Throughout the year, Banff hosts a variety of CULTURAL EVENTS and festivals that celebrate Indigenous heritage. These gatherings typically feature traditional music, dance, and art, allowing visitors to experience the vibrancy of Indigenous cultures firsthand. Participating in these events is a fantastic way to engage with community members and learn more about their traditions.
4. Art Galleries and Exhibitions
Banff is home to several galleries that showcase Indigenous art, providing a platform for Indigenous artists to share their work and stories. Visiting these galleries offers a glimpse into the rich artistic traditions of the Indigenous peoples of the region. You can find a range of artworks, from traditional to contemporary, that reflect the diverse perspectives of Indigenous culture. By participating in guided tours, workshops, culinary experiences, and cultural events, you can contribute to the sustainability and preservation of Indigenous traditions.
**Tips for Engaging with Indigenous Tourism**
- Be Respectful: Approach Indigenous experiences with an open mind and a respectful attitude. Acknowledge the significance of the land and the culture you are engaging with.
- Support Local: Whenever possible, choose to purchase handmade crafts and support Indigenous artisans and businesses.
- Ask Questions: If you have the opportunity to speak with Indigenous guides or community members, don’t hesitate to ask questions. They will often appreciate the interest and can provide deeper insights into their culture.

A Thrilling Adventure Awaits in BANFF NATIONAL PARK
- August 23, 2024
Welcome to the Charltons Banff Hotel blog, allow us to take you into the exhilarating world of adventure that surrounds our area!
“My first impression of The Charltons Banff was a very good one. We had arrived hours before check in and knew we'd never find a parking space in town. The staff let me park at the hotel long before check in time. Later, they let us borrow a can of bear spray for all our hikes so we didn't have to buy it. They were super friendly, and we really enjoyed our stay. Our room on the first floor was nice with a comfortable queen bed and a large bathroom with separate tub and shower. We had plenty of space and were very comfortable. The location is a bit out from the main tourist area of town, so keep that in mind if you don't like walking. We do, and the 12 to 15 minute walk into the shopping district of Banff Avenue was no problem at all. If you”
-A nice place in the heart of Banff, Greg S.“This was our first visit to Banff and the Charlton’s Banff Hotel exceeded our expectations. The room was clean and comfortable and the location of the hotel was excellent. The front desk personnel were very friendly and accommodating. We would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay there again the next time we visit the area. ”
-Cathy B,“Good location and amenities! Rooms were modern, spacious and had a view! The pool was awesome!”
-Excellent, Steven J. - Alberta Canada“This is the second time we have stayed at Charltons and with good reason. The rooms are more than spacious for the two of us and had everything we needed on our stay. We arrived late due to a delayed flight and we were greeted graciously by the reception who said they were expecting us and offered food options in the area at such a late hour on a Sunday, having been travelling for nearly 24 hours at that point. The location is also pretty good, it takes about 10 minutes to walk into the centre, with an IGA supermarket nearby too”
-Been here twice now for a reason, Fortune T.“Don't hesitate to stay here, we had a loft room and it was great. Very comfortable bed, good shower pressure, well kept and clean room. We were able to also book ourselves into the pool for the 30 min time-slot, and we also enjoyed that. Very friendly front desk staff. Overall we were very pleased and definitely recommend this hotel! ”
